Editorial issue 11

We've had lots going on recently here at CERN and as a consequence we've been delayed for a few months in getting this issue together. Therefore, we send our apologies to the authors this month who have been patiently waiting to see their articles live, and to you, our readers. Some of you may have heard some of our news: our new Open Access policy [URL: http://library.cern.ch/cern_publications/CERN_exec_board_23.03.05.html ] was passed by CERN management in March and we have been busy promoting it and putting it into action and then in June we hosted the annual ELAG (European Library Automation Group) meeting [URL: http://elag2005.web.cern.ch/elag2005/ ]. We hope to feature some related articles in a future issue.

In the meantime, we are very pleased to publish news and progress from the E-LIS preprint database: a database that librarians everywhere should be using both to make our work open access and to set an example to all the authors we support. All our Webzine papers are archived in E-LIS and we are proud of the achievements of the team of international volunteers who run it on behalf of us all.

Our next paper is from the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris and from Gallica - a project which is making classic texts available online through scanning and a new portal.

Finally, we present a report on the statistical analyses completed by one of CERN's library students whilst she was with us and as part of her degree. This work was part of a bigger project to look at the impact and implications for our organisation that there might be as a result of a change to a new Open Access publishing model. This topic is going to be of interest to many of us in the coming months and years and CERN will certainly be continuing its own investigations. If anyone else has performed any studies in this area, then please share them with everyone so that we can start to discuss our ideas more widely.

We hope you enjoy reading these articles. As always, if there's something that you are working on that you'd like to share with a wider audience, get in touch; we are always on the look out for interesting work.
