 HEP Libraries Webzine
Issue 2 / October 2000

Editorial Issue 2

After the premature birth of the HEP Libraries Webzine, the first issue attracted more than 3000 people. We thank them for their interest and hope that they enjoy our second issue. We have had precious help from Antonella De Robbio of the Biblioteca del Seminario Matematico, Università degli Studi di Padova in (re)organizing the internal structure of the journal.

In this issue of HEPLW, Gilda Leoni comments on the 2nd CERN Workshop on Electronic Publishing where actors from the publishing houses and non-commercial publishers came together to exchange experiences and ideas.

To continue with the theme of electronic publishing, Michelangelo Mangano gives us his point of view as a library user and the reality of using e-journals. Enrico Martellini takes a look at the librarian/administrator's problems in reconciling the needs of users with the interests of publishers.

Finally, on quite a different topic, Michael Mönnich's article introduces us to the Karlsruhe Virtual Catalogue (KVK) with access to over 60 million book and serials records.

The big event of the period in the HEP Library world is the merger of Paul Ginsparg's XXX server with the Los Alamos Library. The merger will generate extraordinary synergies; "HEP Libraries Webzine" sent a reporter to Los Alamos to get the first inside news. Full report in the next issue!

The e-journal landscape is still moving, the major player Elsevier is close to announcing new important added values to its e-collection.

Once again we thank the authors who have been willing to spend some time and effort in writing an article for our journal. We hope that more people feel encouraged to come forward and share with us their ideas, experiences and points of view, either by writing an article or by commenting on the journal. Suggestions for improvements are always welcome.
